Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Post-harvest losses are a significant challenge for farmers in Nigeria, particularly in rural areas where farmers lack access to modern storage facilities, transportation, and market information. In Dukku Local Government Area, Gombe State, agriculture is the primary source of livelihood for the majority of the population, and post-harvest losses continue to affect the economic stability of farmers. Television, as a widely accessible medium, has the potential to educate farmers on best practices for reducing these losses through better storage techniques, market information, and crop handling practices. Despite its potential, the role of television in addressing post-harvest losses among farmers in Dukku remains under-researched. This study aims to explore how television has been used to educate farmers in the area and evaluate the effectiveness of these educational programs in reducing post-harvest losses.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

In Dukku Local Government Area, farmers face significant challenges related to post-harvest losses, which result in the wastage of valuable produce and loss of income. While television programs have been introduced as a means of providing education and information on improving post-harvest practices, the extent to which these programs are effective in changing farmer behaviors is not well understood. Factors such as the content quality, frequency, and accessibility of television programs may influence the effectiveness of these programs in reducing losses. This study seeks to assess the role of television in educating farmers in Dukku, focusing on how it influences their post-harvest practices and the barriers that may limit its effectiveness.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To explore the role of television in educating farmers about post-harvest losses in Dukku.
  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of television programs in influencing farmers' post-harvest practices.
  3. To identify the challenges and limitations that affect the impact of television programs on post-harvest loss reduction.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How do television programs educate farmers on reducing post-harvest losses in Dukku?
  2. To what extent have television programs influenced farmers' post-harvest practices in Dukku?
  3. What challenges limit the effectiveness of television programs in reducing post-harvest losses in Dukku?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Television programs have a significant impact on reducing post-harvest losses among farmers in Dukku.
  2. Farmers who regularly watch television programs on post-harvest techniques experience lower post-harvest losses compared to those who do not.
  3. Accessibility and content relevance are significant factors that influence the effectiveness of television programs in reducing post-harvest losses.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will provide insights into the effectiveness of television as a medium for educating farmers on post-harvest loss prevention in rural Nigeria. By evaluating the role of television in Dukku, this research will contribute to the development of more targeted and effective media interventions that can help improve agricultural productivity and reduce food waste. The findings will be valuable to policymakers, agricultural extension officers, and media producers who aim to improve agricultural practices in Nigeria.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study is focused on Dukku Local Government Area in Gombe State, specifically examining television as a tool for educating farmers on post-harvest loss reduction. It does not include other forms of media or explore non-media-based interventions. Limitations include potential biases in self-reporting by farmers and the challenge of measuring the long-term impact of television programs on agricultural practices.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  1. Post-Harvest Losses: The loss of agricultural produce after harvesting due to factors such as spoilage, poor handling, inadequate storage, and market access challenges.
  2. Television Programs: Educational or informational content broadcast on television aimed at educating farmers on best practices in agriculture.
  3. Agricultural Extension: Services provided to farmers, often through media, aimed at improving agricultural practices and increasing productivity.
