Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Post-harvest losses are a significant challenge for farmers in Nigeria, particularly in rural areas where farmers lack access to modern storage facilities, transportation, and market information. In Dukku Local Government Area, Gombe State, agriculture is the primary source of livelihood for the majority of the population, and post-harvest losses continue to affect the economic stability of farmers. Television, as a widely accessible medium, has the potential to educate farmers on best practices for reducing these losses through better storage techniques, market information, and crop handling practices. Despite its potential, the role of television in addressing post-harvest losses among farmers in Dukku remains under-researched. This study aims to explore how television has been used to educate farmers in the area and evaluate the effectiveness of these educational programs in reducing post-harvest losses.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
In Dukku Local Government Area, farmers face significant challenges related to post-harvest losses, which result in the wastage of valuable produce and loss of income. While television programs have been introduced as a means of providing education and information on improving post-harvest practices, the extent to which these programs are effective in changing farmer behaviors is not well understood. Factors such as the content quality, frequency, and accessibility of television programs may influence the effectiveness of these programs in reducing losses. This study seeks to assess the role of television in educating farmers in Dukku, focusing on how it influences their post-harvest practices and the barriers that may limit its effectiveness.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
1.4 Research Questions
1.5 Research Hypotheses
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide insights into the effectiveness of television as a medium for educating farmers on post-harvest loss prevention in rural Nigeria. By evaluating the role of television in Dukku, this research will contribute to the development of more targeted and effective media interventions that can help improve agricultural productivity and reduce food waste. The findings will be valuable to policymakers, agricultural extension officers, and media producers who aim to improve agricultural practices in Nigeria.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is focused on Dukku Local Government Area in Gombe State, specifically examining television as a tool for educating farmers on post-harvest loss reduction. It does not include other forms of media or explore non-media-based interventions. Limitations include potential biases in self-reporting by farmers and the challenge of measuring the long-term impact of television programs on agricultural practices.
